UGLY LIGHT CABLES GET TRENDY!

This is a short note on how I have transformed an ordinary cable for a custom lamp into a feature cable that looks so much nicer.

What I have used: fabric, scissors, hot glue pen, and ordinary cable.

I cut a strip of material, wide enough to go round the cable comfortably (i.e. without having th pull on it) and overlap of about 1.5 cm onto itself.

It would have been nicer and easier to have a ribbon like material instead as that would have sorted the fraying issue out, and therefore saved some work and trouble. But I didnt find what I wanted so I used the fabric.

I placed some glue on the cable to fix one of the material's edge.

This allowed me to roll the material around with ease. Once rolled around, the material gets a strip of glue on the inside and very near to the edge, so that once pressed against the overlap the glue squeezes out just enough to prevent the fraying.  Be careful: the glue will be hot and will stick onto your skin! And it is painful. I worked in sections of about 15cm at a time because that gave me time to work the fabric around before the glue set.

You can see the edge of the material up close but once this is fitted on a lampshade and onto the ceiling it is hardly visible. Of course I do believe that a ribbon would have resulted in a easier job.

Et voilá!

As it is, I think this has worked quite well.

P.S. I did the connections myself. But if you are not sure, call the professionals.

This was sent to and used by a client for a home made lamp.
