CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOUR WHEN THE STAKES ARE HIGHER THAN JUST STYLE

It’s a business decision.

Colours don’t live in isolation.
They shift depending on:

  • natural light

  • orientation

  • even what’s outside the window

When you’re flipping a property, colour isn’t just a matter of taste.
It’s a business decision.

It shapes how buyers feel when they walk through the door.
And that feeling is what makes them stop comparing, start imagining themselves living there, and say yes.

But if you’ve ever tried to replicate a beautiful room you saw online, you’ve probably hit this problem:
The colour doesn’t look the same in your space.
Not even close.

That’s because colours don’t live in isolation.
They shift depending on:

  • natural light

  • orientation

  • even what’s outside the window.

So if you’re flipping for profit, you can’t afford to guess.
Here’s how to get it right, especially when you’re working with neutrals, which are trickier than they look.

THE FLIPPER’S METHOD FOR GETTING COLOUR RIGHT

  1. Head to a large B&Q store with a full Valspar range.
Collect white samples from every colour section. not just the ‘neutrals’.
Why? Because these are organised by undertone (red, green, blue, etc.), which matters more than you think.

  2. Take them home (or outside the store) and compare against your moodboard or photo reference.
But don’t pick one yet. This is just the filtering stage.

  3. Choose a few that seem closest, and buy tester pots—never just one.
Grab a roll of cheap lining paper while you’re there.

  4. Cut strips about 60cm wide and paint large swatches.
Do two coats and leave a white border. Use the full pot.

  5. Stick them on different walls - one on the top part, one low if you have panelling - but only in pairs.
Seeing too many at once will confuse your eyes.

  6. Over the next day or two, move your favourites around.
Watch how they shift in different light.
If something feels off, swap it out and keep going.

This process isn’t quick. But it gives you what most flippers don’t have:
Confidence in your colour decision.

That confidence means no repainting.
No awkward results when the estate agent takes photos.
And no money wasted on the wrong shade in five different rooms.

Because in FLIPIT, we don’t pick colours to express ourselves.
We pick colours that connect with the buyer.

And once you understand how to test properly, that’s exactly what happens.
The room feels good. It feels easy to live in.
And it gets you that higher offer faster.

P.S. This method works just as well for bold colours too.
But for flips? Getting your neutrals right is what makes everything else work harder.
